Christmas Carol 2011

Same as recent years, we had another year of a rewarding and fun-filled event for both the seniors and Paulinians. More than 30 enthusiastic participants, who put on red top, black pants and santa hats, visited three seniors homes on Saturday, 10 December, 2011. All three seniors homes are in China town area, namely Simon KS Lee Seniors Home 李國賢護理安老院, Grace Seniors Home 天恩頤康院 and Villa Cathay 華宮安老院.

The carol team sang several traditional Christmas carol and a few Cantonese popular songs. Highlight of this year is the attempt in singing ‘Silent Night’ in German with solo by Josephine Hui and guitar accompaniment by Peter Lui. It was very well performed as well as received! Every senior audience received a Christmas gift to celebrate the joyous festivity.

"I have lived long enough to this age, and this is the first time that such a beautiful performance was presented to me. I am indebted to all of you beautiful ladies" - a grateful note from an 85 years old senior.

To conclude this fruitful event, many Paulinians put forward a regular monthly ‘get together’ for songs singing.

Thank you very much to those who have made donation to buying gifts to the seniors.

Hiking

More than 20 participants gathered on Saturday, 14 May 2011 for our Spring Hiking event. Weather was beautiful; cool and sunny; which was excellent for outdoor activity. Participants met at The Boathouse Restaurant at 10 am and started strolling leisurely along the Sea Walk from Kitslano to Granville Island. The walk was about 45 minutes during which all participants enjoyed the very refreshing breezes from the shore.

When we reached Granville Island, we browsed around shops in the Granville Island Public Market and then had lunch at the food court. While enjoying the food, we had a nice chit-chat on various topics. After lunch, most of the participants walked back to Kitslano. All participants found the hiking very enjoyable and relaxing.

Cooking lesson for Vegetarian Sausage

The first cooking workshop, which was hosted by Olympia Jue on Saturday, 16 April 2011, taught how to make Vegetarian Sausage 紮蹄.

Since 紮蹄 was very well received by the guests during pre-dinner activities of the annual dinner, people showed great interest in learning how to do it at home. This gave the ExCo an initiative to invite Paulinian Olympia Jue who made the紮蹄 to lead a cooking workshop. The workshop was attended by the ExCo members, phone co-ordinators and their spouses. It offered the attendees an opportunity to grasp the trick to prepare this dish. In addition to open her kitchen for the workshop, Olympia generously provided all cooking ingredients, an essential kit for the dish and a piece of diaper for each attendee. We all had a good laugh during the workshop and enjoyed the time we spent together.

Annual Dinner 2011

This most popular event was held on Friday, 18 February 2011 at Shiang Garden in Richmond with a total of 106 members and their guests participating.

Theme of the Annual Dinner was Lantern Festival 元宵節 which is also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day. The venue was decorated as traditional street scene of Lantern Festival; with red lanterns, begonia flower, snack stalls, etc. As participants were encouraged to dress for the event, over 60% of participants put on traditional Chinese attires; bringing a feeling of vintage to the Dinner.

Before Dinner, all participants had a taste of traditional snacks including sweet dumplings 湯丸, dumplings 餃子, bean curds 扎蹄, rice cake 年糕, osmanthus cake 桂花糕 and peanut brittle 花生糖, all of which were homemade by Paulinians namely Ann Tan, Frances Wong, Olympia Jue and Sylvia Chok. While tasting the delicious snacks, participants took part in the riddle on the lanterns which was the typical activity of Lantern Festival.

Every guest received a welcome package which consisted of a Chinese fragrant cachet 香囊, traditional longxu candy 龍鬚糖 and a well-designed “red lantern” program. Moreover, all participants got a share in the lucky draw as we had a total of 110 prizes and 5 table prizes for each table including Chinese wine, luggage tag, begonia flower and Japanese restaurant coupons. All prizes were donated by our generous members.

The highlight of the dinner was brought by 3 performances: Peking opera 「貴妃醉酒」by our talented Paulinian Theresa Wang, popular oldies by amateur band 55+ and several love songs by professional singer Eva Lee. All were very well received and earned nonstop applause from all participants.

The dinner came to the end after drawing of 3 grand prizes donated by Elizabeth Tan, Sylvia Chok and Geraldine Lui respectively.

All members and their guests had an enjoyable evening and treasured meeting with fellow Paulinians sharing sweet memories of days of girlhoods.
