Carol Singing Dec 2012

The Christmas carol singing for the seniors was held on Saturday, December 8th. As usual, the carol team visited three seniors homes in Vancouver China town area, namely Simon K.Y. Lee Senior Care Home, Villa Cathay Care Home and Grace Seniors Home.

It was a cold and sunny day with clear sky; perfect for 40 carol singers to spend some time with seniors. There were two record breaking this year; firstly, in the number of singers and secondly, a school bus was arranged to give ride to singers. The school bus was sponsored by a school bus company and it picked up and dropped off singers in three stops. This was greatly appreciated by everyone as it not only offered convenience but also provided more time for chit-chat during the ride.

The carol team stayed at each seniors home for around 45 minutes; starting with eight carols and two popular Cantonese songs, then followed by playing interactive games with seniors and giving out Christmas present to all those who were present. With the donation of a Paulinian, we took instant photos of seniors and framed them with our handmade Christmas cards. The seniors loved our songs and company.

All carol singers found the day very rewarding; apart from bringing happiness and festive joyfulness to the residents of the senior homes, they have had a great day of gathering and sharing thus enhanced both Paulinian and team spirit.

BBQ Jun 2012

Our Barbeque Picnic was held on June 16th 2012 at Cates Park, Deep Cove, North Vancouver.

Deep Cove is one of the best scenic places in British Columbia. We have 41 people attended the event including family members. The weather was cloudy in the morning and followed with rain in the afternoon. Luckily we have rented a shelter and we gathered together inside and have a good time enjoying the food and socializing with each other. Thank you very much for the good Paulinian spirit which made the rainy day, a happy occasion for everyone that attended the BBQ. The event was ended a little early than intended due to the rain, but we believe everyone did enjoy the day.

Tulip Tour April 2012

For the first time, the Alumni organized a bus trip to US for visiting prestigious tulip fields in US. A total of 24 members and family/friends joined the 1-day trip on Saturday, 21 April 2012. The bus picked participants up at the first stop point at 6:45am at Burnaby, then Vancouver and Richmond. Participants shared breakfast on the bus, had lunch in the State of Washington and returned to Richmond for a yummy Chinese Dinner.

It was a sunny and warm day with clear sky. The first stop was Tulip Town in Skagit Valley, Washington, 70 miles from Richmond along I-5. All participants were all awe struck at the beauty of the colorful tulip fields. Then, the group visited the historical town of Anacortes with more than 100 life-sized murals for exploring. The next stop was Blau Oyster Farm in Samish Bay where participants sampled fresh local oysters. With contentment, some participants brought fresh oysters home for sharing with family/friends. Before heading home, participants stopped at Exit 256 to shop at Ross and Marshall’s.

All participants liked this outdoor event and considered to be very enjoyable and relaxing. In addition to viewing the spectacular tulip fields, participants treasured a day of gathering with fellow Paulinians.

Annual Dinner 2012

Annual Dinner, which is the most popular event of the Alumni, was held on Friday, 3 February 2012 at Shiang Garden in Richmond with a total of 111 members and their guests participating.

Theme of the Annual Dinner was "Sweet Memory of School Days" which aimed to bring all participants back to those golden days of childhood in schools. Decoration of the venue was divided into two parts : the stage was decorated as speech day with certificates, prizes and trophies while banquet hall was turned to be a school dance party with lots of balloons and colourful crinkle paper. Some participants dressed for the event by wearing school uniform like clothing or clothing in blue, green, white or black or with tartan, or dresses/skirts with pleat.

Before Dinner, there was a display of school memorable items including school uniforms, school magazines, society badges, trophies, medals, etc. Paulinians were very excited to see these collections and took photos with them for their "record". At the same time, participants could use 10 cents per piece to buy snacks we used to have in our school days. Snacks included 咖哩魚疍豬皮,鹵水墨魚,蠔油豆,茶葉疍,煎蘿蔔糕 and 熟花生 were homemade by Paulinians namely Frances Wong, Sylvia Chok, Olympia Jue and Rose Leung. As usual, all snakes were well received by participants and some were "sold" out within fifteen minutes. Participants regarded that all these did bring back their sweet memory of the school days.

Every guest received a welcome package which consisted of a key chain with imprint of school badge, chupa chup, 肚池餅, 蠶豆, 脆花生 and 話梅/陳皮/檸檬/红羗/金桔/齋鷄粒. Again, all these were the snacks we had when we were in school. Moreover, all participants got a share in the lucky draw as we had over 110 prizes and 5 table prizes for each table including luggage tag, chopsticks, magnet clip and ball pen. All prizes were donated by our generous members.

For all Paulinians, they received a ‘school report card’ to record their marks in five games which were all related to school subjects such as Chinese, English, Mathematics, Science and P.E. Participants were enthusiastic and found the games interesting and fun.

The highlight of the dinner was brought by the performance by talented Paulinians, namely, Daisy Chan, Jenny Chan, Joanna Tang, Josephine Hui, Rose Leung, and Theresa Wang. They sang folk songs from 60’s to 70’s like Donna Donna, A Hundred Miles and some Chinese pop songs. All participants were familiar with these songs and majority sang along the performers. For a while, the venue was like our music room in school.

The dinner came to the end after drawing of 4 grand prizes donated by Mimi Sy, Elizabeth Tan, Sylvia Chok and Geraldine Lui respectively.

All members and their guests had an enjoyable evening and treasured meeting with fellow Paulinians sharing sweet memories of days of girlhoods.
